- "Well, either he's mad or there's some other mystery."
- ―Digory Kirke[src]
Andrew Ketterley was Digory Kirke's eccentric uncle; his mother's brother.
Andrew is a self-proclaimed "magician" [of which the title, The Magician's Nephew speaks], although he only copies the magic tricks he learns from books. He is responsible for starting the travel between Earth and Narnia, through the the crafting of the magic rings which Digory and Polly Plummer use to access the Wood Between the Worlds. Initially a frightening figure to Digory and Polly, Andrew is too cowardly and incompetent to be a serious villain, though he does cause much trouble both intentionally and unintentionally. Too scared to try out the magic rings himself, he cruelly tricks the children into trying the rings without knowing how they work, resulting in their accidental visit to Charn and the transport of the evil witch Jadis first to Earth and then to Narnia. In Narnia, while the others are marvelling at the miracle of Aslan's creation of the world, all Andrew is interested in are the possibilities for commercial exploitation. During Jadis's brief visit to Earth, he becomes infatuated with her. He was described as "prideful as a peacock", and had a drinking problem. Andrew had a "fairy godmother" named Mrs. Lefay who was his real godmother.
